Under the auspices of
the Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic Daniel Herman,
the Councillor for Culture of teh City of Prague Jan Wolf,
and the Mazor of teh District of Prague 1 Oldřich Lomecký

Do you not realize that women, and women only, are to be credited with all the delightful pastimes which the world doth so admire? Why do we learn to dance gracefully if not to please the ladies? And is it not for the same reason, after all, that we practice playing sweet music?
(Baldassare Castiglione, 1478–1529)

FEMINA AETERNA

Throughout history, women in music were regarded as an exception, or even an anomaly. Yet, the development of music in the past was influenced by a number of outstanding female composers, performers, and patrons; although they rarely made it into the canon. The Summer Festivities of Early Music chose this important aspect of the history of music and the motif of the “Eternal Woman” as the main theme of its 16th edition.

The programme of the Summer Festivities of Early music in 2015 was dedicated to various kinds of female musicality. The programme included works by the first known woman composer, the Medieval donna universale Hildegard von Bingen; pieces by the Italian Baroque composers Julie Pinel and Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre; music inspired by the lives of female heroines of the Christian tradition; and compositions based on female mythological figures.

The festival hosted a number of outstanding musicians for many of whom it was their first appearance in Prague. The listeners had a chance to admire the vocal art of Luanda Siqueira from Brazil, the countertenor Terry Wey from Austria, the charismatic performance on the viola da gamba by Lucile Boulanger, the mesmeric and versatile Paulina van Laarhoven with La Violetta, and the phenomenal guitar player Quito Gato. The close of the festival was dedicated to the Baroque opera Calisto in the performance by the ensemble in residence Collegium Marianum.
