The association of cornet and St Agnes Cloister seems to have become a fixed item on the menu of Summer Festivities of Early Music. This year the Church of St Francis will host the American cornetist Doron David Sherwin and the “local” harpsichordist and organist Barbara Maria Willi. The title of their performance, Dulce novumque melos (Sweet New Songs) indicates what kind of atmosphere will prevail the third night in August. The programme is dedicated to the admirers of music by Orlando di Lasso, Pierluigi da Palestrina and Giovanni Gabrielli, to name just a few, as well as to those times in which Renaissance was melting into Baroque and when the churches of Rome and Venice resounded with the wistful tones of the cornet. One can only wish the day will come when it returns to its rightful place!
