The legendary Belgian flute player Barthold Kuijken based his programme on an interesting confrontation of the foremost exponent of baroque music, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), with his second son Carl Philipp Emanuel (1714–1788) who represents the following phase in the history of music, the transition styles (Empfindsamkeit, Sturm und Drang) leading up to Classicism. The confrontation of the compositional styles of the father and the son was the more interesting and telling as it looked at their production in particular years and presented one or two chamber compositions for the same line-up by each of them coming form 1737, 1740–41 and 1747, thus spanning their output from the young Carl Philipp Emanuel’s to the late works by Johann Sebastian.
